Author Robert Brault once said, "I value the friend who for me finds time on his calendar, but I cherish the friend who for me does not consult his calendar." This describes Ron Modell perfectly. This spirit of giving of himself to others is part of his DNA.I first met Ron after my freshman year at Oberlin when, on the recommendation of his Uncle Milty (my high school trumpet teacher, Milton Davidson), he hired me to play a summer gig with him at the Pines Hotel in the Catskills. At the time, he still held the position of principal trumpet in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. A few years later, I found myself in the Navy stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois. Ron had given up his position in Dallas and was in the process of starting that fantastic jazz program at Northern Illinois University, just an hour away. I called him to see if he would be willing to give me some trumpet lessons. It wasn't until much later that the thought even entered my head that he must have been incredibly busy in his new role, yet without giving it a second thought, Ron agreed. It's a life lesson I've never forgotten and remain grateful for.
So when I learned that Ron had completed his long-awaited book, I snatched it up as quickly as he had agreed to teach me back in the day. What a delight to rekindle the memories of the things I knew from personal experience, but even more exciting was reading about all the things I knew nothing about! It's a delicious read.
Often humorous, sometimes sad, at other times poignant, but always entertaining, Ron's story is one of a life well led. Whether you are a musician or don't know a trumpet from a flute, you will enjoy this book. I believe Ron Modell was put on this earth not only to entertain us with his incredible gifts as a musician and educator, but to lift people's spirits and bring joy to everyone whose life he touched.
He is indeed an extraordinary man who has led an extraordinary life. You'll love bein' there with Ron when you read his book.

Loved Bein' Here With You Mr Ron Modell 9780989052023 Books Reviews
Ron Has written a book that successfully captures his incredibly complex yet transparent personality. It was a joy to read. What a. Incredible life he has led.
I know these stories. As his sister-in-law I've heard them all. So, I was surprised, when I dutifully read this book, to find it so riveting. Ronnie is not only a good story teller, who has lead a full and fascinating life, but a superb writer as well. I strongly commend this book to you.

A wonderful book presented by one of the greatest jazz educators of all time. "The Mode" as he is affectionately called by many shares his life, his humor, his business sense and his heart in these entertaining pages. Ron Modell has always had the innate ability to surround himself with excellence and this new book proves it. Slam dunk 5 starts! A great piece of written work for a wide cross section of readers.
A very good, inciteful, easy read. With the exception of the chapter where Ron tries to instruct the non-instrumentalist in the techniques for "tonguing" a trumpet, every chapter opens up an exciting new page of Ron's life amongst a ton of music's notables, both known and unknown. Love how he uses the most wonderful adjectives to describe his wife, Kathy, too!
Particularly interesting to anyone familiar with the world of brass players and trumpeters particularly. Well-written and filled with anecdotes and jokes from Ron's sixty-five year career as solo orchestral trumpet and originator of the Jazz Band at Northern Illinois University. Illustrated with many pictures of celebrity friends and cooperating musicians from Ron's experiences. Economically priced, and looks good on one's .
Thoroughly enjoyed all of it. But then I expected as much. Ron had an incredibly positive influence on the lives of many, many people throughout his life. As a member of the original NIU Jazz Ensemble I knew Ron as an educator and as a friend. After graduating from NIU I remember being invited to lunch by Ron when I was a graduate student at Indiana University. The other person he had invited was none other than the great Russian trumpet player Timofei Dokshizer. The thing I found most amazing was that the only language Ron and Timofei had in common was Yiddish but it didn't slow the exchange between the three of us in the least. A memorable experience to say the least. The book is well written and will be of interest and very entertaining even to those without a music background.
GREAT BOOK!!! I've known Ron since I was a student at NIU in the 70's. I enjoyed reading about his early start in music and all of the people that he has had a chance to work with because of his involvement in music. Great section on his teaching techniques, too!! The NIU Jazz Band was always something to look forward to - when I heard them before I went to NIU, while at NIU and since I have been an educator. Great stories about the band and soloists. I found my self laughing at loud as Ron's sense of humor came shining through in his book! Thanks for all that you have done for the world of music and music education!!
